Community Stewardship

As we take you on our journey of community investing, watch how we have touched lives in Singapore and across Asia through our Temasek Foundations.

We have a stake in the well-being of our community, and exercise good stewardship through community contributions in order to make a difference.

Since our inception in 1974, we have established 17 non-profit philanthropic endowments. These focus on different aspects of building people, building communities, building capabilities and rebuilding lives.

To date, these endowments have touched over 500,000 lives across Asia and in Singapore.

In 2003, we made a policy decision to contribute a portion of our excess returns above the risk-adjusted cost of capital to our communities. We use this money to seed endowments, and also establish new ones from time to time to tackle emerging needs in our community.

Temasek Trust was established in 2007 to independently provide financial oversight and governance of Temasek’s philanthropic endowments and gifts. The Trust is responsible for the disciplined and sustainable disbursements of the endowments and gifts to Temasek’s six Foundations, which in turn are guided by their respective strategic thrusts and mandates to drive their community programmes.

The Trust also serves as a convener of philanthropic ideas and best practices, an advocate of corporate giving, and a catalyst for enhancing capabilities. Now 10 years old, Temasek Trust has its role broadened to include thought leadership on philanthropy.

The six Foundations are Temasek Foundation International, Temasek Foundation Cares, Temasek Foundation Connects, Temasek Foundation Nurtures, Temasek Foundation Innovates and Temasek Foundation Ecosperity.

The governance model separates the financial management of endowments from the Foundations, which enables them to focus on what they do best – developing programmes for the community, knowing that their endowments are professionally managed to give them a sustainable source of support over the years.
