Rediscover Singapore’s Classic Hits As They Get Remade By Singapore’s Young Music Talents

Temasek and National Arts Council present “Pop-up Noise: The Great Singapore Replay”, in first-ever strategic partnership

1 June 2017

SINGAPORE, 1 June 2017 – Bringing back popular tunes from the 1960s to today, Pop-Up Noise: The Great Singapore Replay, will provide a platform for up-and-coming young musicians to reimagine Singapore classic hits and share them with the public, evoking a shared nostalgia for music from yesteryears. This initiative is a collaboration between like-minded partners, Temasek and the National Arts Council (NAC), in enabling young Singaporeans to develop and showcase musical talents.

Rosa Daniel, Chief Executive Officer, National Arts Council said, “For over a decade, Noise Singapore has played a key role in arts creation, participation and appreciation among youths in our country. We are happy to be working with Temasek to enable more young people to take centre-stage and reach their artistic goals. Through our partnership, we are confident Pop-Up Noise: The Great Singapore Replay will bring Singaporeans together by reliving some of Singapore’s classic hits, while giving today's musicians a chance to uniquely interpret these popular songs."

“Temasek is part of the Singapore story. Collaborating with the NAC, The Great Singapore Replay aims to bring together people across generations through the rediscovery of ‘made-in-Singapore’ music, whilst providing a platform that inspires young creative talents to contribute to our rich local music heritage,” said Mr Robin Hu, Head, Sustainability and Stewardship Group, Temasek. “Temasek cares deeply about the wellbeing of our community and this active programming initiative is part of our ongoing support in enabling and nurturing young Singaporean talents.”

Vote for your favourite Singapore classic hits

To propel the appreciation and awareness of Singapore’s English contemporary music scene to a new level, members of the public will be invited to vote for their favourite classic hits from a curated list of 25 popular tunes from the 1960s to 2000s. The top 10 songs receiving the most number of votes will be remade by ten pairs of emerging and established musical talents, such as .gif, Shak’thiya, Charlie Lim and Sara Wee, who will work together to give each chosen song a fresh spin.

Debbi Koh, an emerging indie singer-songwriter said, “Being able to use my creativity to take a chance on a classic Singapore tune is an opportunity I’m very grateful for. Alongside the incredible Inch Chua, I can’t wait to learn more about the song chosen for me, and I hope that we do the song justice through our musical influence.”

“It is an honour for me to be working with one of our promising young artists on this unique initiative. It’s an enjoyable walk down memory lane to be able to immerse ourselves in the classic hits of our past and work together with our next generation to remake them in our own ways. I look forward to sharing our interpretations with the public later this year.” said Singapore’s established musician, Inch Chua.

Follow the creative journey as these classic hits are reimagined

The journey of these collaborations will also be captured and featured in weekly webisodes for the public to follow and be part of the remaking process.

Shout-out to aspiring musicians to submit their own renditions of Singapore classic hits

As part of the organisers’ efforts to enable local aspiring musicians to unleash their creativity and reach their artistic goals, an Open Call will be held from 10 July 2017. Participants can record a cover of their favourite original Singapore classic released between 1960 and 2000, in any of Singapore’s four official languages and genre, and publish it on YouTube for the chance to win S$500, as well as perform the cover of the song ‘live’ during the final showcase.

All applicants will also be invited for an opportunity to participate in a Stage Performance Workshop conducted by homegrown musician and producer Tim De Cotta. The workshop will focus on stage performances and create a space for different musicians to share experiences when it comes to preparing for performances.

Watch the musicians take centre-stage

The hard work of the musicians will culminate in a final showcase held at Clarke Quay Central on 9 September 2017. The public can watch the 10 emerging artists perform live their freshly reimagined classic hits as well as several of their songs.

Public voting for the 10 Singapore classic hits to be remade begins on 1 June 2017 and it can be done at any of the five locations of the roving jukebox voting booth or online at www.thegreatsingaporereplay.sg.
