Our People, Our Music 2014: A mega rehearsal for a record-breaking concert

It is clear this was no ordinary rehearsal. On 26 April, nearly 4,000 Chinese orchestra members, bearing instruments like the liuqin and erhu, joined hands at the Singapore Expo Hall for a practice session of epic proportions.

They have come together to rehearse for Our People, Our Music 2014, a musical extravaganza to be held on the 28th of June. Organised by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) and supported by patron sponsors Temasek, Tote Board, and National Arts Council, the show is anticipated to be one of the biggest events of the year, not least because it is held at the National Stadium within the brand new Singapore Sports Hub.

It is billed as the largest concert ever held in Singapore -- 3,820 musicians will join 1,380 choir members to make up a whopping 5,200 participants. Together, they will attempt to break five records including Singapore Book of Records for largest Chinese orchestra, and both the Guinness World Records and Singapore Book of Records for largest erhu ensemble and largest Chinese drum ensemble.

Our People, Our Music is choreographed by SCO’s venerable music director Tsung Yeh, and will also star local artistes such as Vincent Ng who will be performing martial arts to the music, and legendary songwriter Dick Lee who will sing his classic ode to Singapore – Home (theme song for 1998’s National Day Parade) – while accompanied by the orchestra.

With 125 performing groups (including schools and community groups), 16 nationalities and a diverse range of ages (from a two year old to an 86 year old), Our People, Our Music 2014 not only highlights the beauty of Chinese orchestra music, but brings people together – forming a grand and heartfelt tribute to Singapore.
