New Family of Foundations to Better Serve the Community

Singapore, 6 September 2016 – Temasek announces the launch of its new Philanthropic Platform as it seeks to better serve the evolving needs of the community. The new Platform reinforces Temasek’s approach to engaging with our communities, which is founded on the concept of sustainable and responsible contributions.

The platform comprises Temasek Trust, six Foundations and a new central services and support entity. Guided by Temasek’s strategic direction and mandates, the Foundations strive towards achieving positive outcomes for individuals and communities through 17 endowments.

The Foundations and their strategic thrusts are:

  • Temasek Foundation International (capability and capacity building)
  • Temasek Foundation Cares (communities in Singapore)
  • Temasek Foundation Connects (building bridges)
  • Temasek Foundation Nurtures (education and professional development)
  • Temasek Foundation Innovates (research and innovation)
  • Temasek Foundation Ecosperity (sustainability)

Temasek Trust – established in 2007 and chaired by Mr S Dhanabalan – continues to provide financial oversight and governance of Temasek’s endowment gifts to the six Foundations. Additionally, to support the work of the philanthropic platform, a new entity – Temasek Foundation Management Services – is being created to provide a dedicated centre to drive collaboration, support the work of the Foundations and promote synergies.

The new Platform aims to enhance overall effectiveness by optimising resources in the delivery of programmes to beneficiaries, and to increase collaboration to achieve better outcomes.

Mr Lim Boon Heng, Chairman of Temasek, said: “We have identified leaders, all very capable and passionate individuals, to lead the foundations. I have every confidence they will uphold the highest standards required in their new roles as stewards of the foundations.”

“Temasek made a commitment in 2003 to set aside a portion of our returns, above our risk adjusted cost of capital, for the broader community. We use this money to seed endowments. We also establish new ones from time to time to tackle emerging needs in our community.

“For instance, in 2014, we established the Temasek Emergency Preparedness Fund (T-PREP), which helps Singaporeans prepare for emergency situations and build resilience.”

Helming the Trust and Foundations are an esteemed group of Chairmen, to be supported by diverse and independent boards:

  • Mr S Dhanabalan, Chairman, Temasek Trust
  • Mr Goh Geok Khim, Temasek Foundation International
  • Mr Richard Magnus, Temasek Foundation Cares
  • Mr Benny Lim, Temasek Foundation Connects
  • Mr Liew Mun Leong, Temasek Foundation Nurtures
  • Prof Leo Tan, Temasek Foundation Innovates
  • Mr Teo Ming Kian, Temasek Foundation Ecosperity

Mr Lim added: “Temasek is constantly evolving and changing how we do our work. But our role as a trusted steward and our commitment to advance communities – why we work – will not change. The establishment of the Temasek Philanthropic Platform is not a new direction for us. It does signal the next step in our continuous journey of community investing.”

Managed by the six Foundations, the 17 endowments established by Temasek focus on building people, building communities, building capabilities and rebuilding lives, for the wider community in Singapore, Asia and beyond.

Since Temasek’s inception, over S$2 billion has been committed for community initiatives, which has enabled Temasek’s non-profit philanthropic organisations to touch the lives of more than 300,000 people locally and across Asia.
